You know the feeling you get when the underdog wins? It’s a feeling of triumph. Not only do we get to see the “little guy” win but there’s something about those victories that make us feel like we’ve won too. Somehow their victory is our victory.
It’s a Winning Formula
Movie makers earn millions making us feel victorious in films such as: The Karate Kid, The Man from Snowy River, Facing the Giants, and The Blind Side. The list goes on. Let’s face it – feel good movies make us feel good.
We love these moments in the movies, but we love them even more in real life. We love it when the school bully suddenly realizes he picked on the wrong kid. We love it when the nerd gets the high-school beauty queen. We love it when perpetual losers become winners.
The Bible is full of these feel-good moments. We see time and time again how God’s people appeared to be the underdogs and yet, amazingly, came out victorious. Anybody remember David and Goliath, the Israelites vs Pharaoh, Joshua and Jericho, Joseph vs everybody, and “crazy” Noah (just to name a few)?
In all of those moments God made the impossible possible. He rose up the underdog and made him victorious.
Are Christians Underdogs?
Any member of God’s army is never truly an “underdog”. However, the world is working overtime to convince us that we are. In truth – it’s really just a smokescreen. The devil knows better. He knows we will be victorious, but he works hard to make us feel defeated, maligned, and powerless.
Maybe in this time of political, economic, and social unrest you’re beginning to feel like the underdog. Has it been hard for you to feel optimistic? Do you feel like God hasn’t heard His people? Don’t worry! He has! Does it feel like moving in the direction God wants you to just seems daunting (or flat out pointless)? Remember – that’s exactly how the devil wants you to feel.
For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.
2 Timothy 1:7
Whose Battle is it?
The key thing to remember in each of those Biblical instances is that the battle being faced was never David’s, Gideon’s, etc. The battle always belonged to God. He was perfectly in charge of every aspect then and He’s perfectly in charge now.
What is our Role?
Our role is to lift our heads high knowing, without a doubt, we have the power of the almighty God on our side. However, it’s not just about God being with us – we must be with Him!! We must continue to strengthen our faith, be steadfast in our loyalty and be obedient. Those “underdogs” in the Bible would never have been used by God without those things.
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.
Joshua 1:9
How Does it End?
STAND FIRM!! The “underdogs” win! Let me encourage you to be bold in your faith, trusting God to do mighty things. Don’t give up on Him because He hasn’t given up on you. Remember, with God, the impossible is never truly impossible. His glory will be revealed in His perfect time.
So encouraging!
