How many of you have friends or family members that don’t know God (or don’t have a relationship with Him)? Chances are, several of you. The Bible says people who are lost are surrounded in darkness and can’t see the truth. So, as a ninja Christian, how do we help them see truth?
We try talking to them. We try praying for them. And through all of that – sometimes the effort seems futile. We don’t often see quick results because people aren’t quick to change. And some people, simply, don’t want to hear.
The Darkness of the Cave
Imagine you’re in a cave and surrounded by darkness. You’re completely lost and don’t know which direction you should go. Things seem hopeless. Eventually, your eyes begin to adjust. You may even get used to the darkness and learn how to make do. But even though you’ve learned to cope with your environment, you’re still in the dark. You’re still lost even if you don’t know it anymore.
Now, imagine a rescue worker at the exit of the cave. He has a tool to help him see in the dark. It’s called a flashlight. If he turns on his flashlight and aims it into the cave, the light will eventually make its way to you. Your first and natural instinct is to walk toward that light. It offers hope and draws you toward it. However, when the rescue worker turns off his flashlight, the light disappears. Once again, you’re engulfed in darkness. If only, the rescue worker had kept the light coming.
So Jesus said to them, “For a little while longer the Light is among you. Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you; he who walks in the darkness does not know where he goes.
John 12:35
Pray the Light
Your loved one is the one in the cave and you are the rescue worker. You’ve been given a great tool by God (prayer) to shine light into your loved one’s life. Only the light that shines from your flashlight is not an ordinary light. It’s the Light of truth.
We can choose to turn our flashlight on or leave it off. When we turn it on (when we pray), God’s light of truth is generated and shines into the darkness. We’re calling on God’s truth to shine in the direction of our loved one. Every time we pray we’re turning on a light for someone in the dark to see.
Don’t Give Up – Keep the Light On
The more we dedicate ourselves to praying for our loved ones, the longer (and stronger) God’s light will shine through us. Maybe this is why we’re told to “pray continually” (1 Thess. 5:17). Yes, our loved ones still have to make their own choices. But by praying – we at least illuminate their options. It’s amazing what light can do to reveal the reality of our situation. Never underestimate the power of God’s light. It shines bright and envelopes us with warmth, hope, and love. How can someone not be drawn to that?
I have come as Light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness.
John 12:46
God provided the tools for us to use. He wants us to shine His light brightly. He wants us to pray. Think how different the world would look if it was filled with light. So, be more than a flicker. Turn your flashlight on, keep it on, and watch God light up the place!!
